How to create a Windows VM on GCP4 min read

Preface

If you are a Linux or macOS user, then it’s quite difficult for you to work on Windows OS. But there are simpler ways to achieve that as well. You can either download a Windows VM image and import it in VirtualBox or VMware to work on Windows. Or you can create a Windows VirtualMachine on the cloud such as GCP/AWS/Azure. In this article, we will learn how to create a Windows VM on GCP and connect to it.

Pre-requisites

  1. You need to have a billing enabled account on GCP. You can refer to the blog: Create a billing account on GCP.

Create a Windows VM on GCP

1. In GCP, go to Compute Engine > VM instances > click on Create

2. Provide the name of the VM

3. Change boot disk of the VM. Select the below shown options,

4. Click on Create

5. After the creation of the VM, you will see a screen like below,

Done. We have successfully created a Windows VM on GCP. Now, follow the below steps to connect to this VM.


Connecting to the Windows VM on GCP

1. Click on the arrow beside RDP and click on Set Windows password

2. Keep the username as it is and click on Set

3. You will be shown a new password. Copy it and save it in your local system. Close.

4. Click on the arrow beside RDP again and click on Download the RDP file

5. Once done, open the RDP file.

6. Click on Connect

7. Provide the password you copied in Step3

8. Click on OK. You will see a warning message as below,

9. Click on Yes and you will be connected to the Windows VM

If you are using macOS, then follow the below steps (after downloading the RDP file and saving the password) to connect to the Windows VM.


Connecting to Windows VM from macOS

1. Open App Store, search for Microsoft Remote Desktop and install it.

2. Open Microsoft Remote Desktop > click on the gear icon > Import from RDP file…

3. Select the RDP file and open it.

4. You will see the VM in the App now. Double-click on it to connect to it.

5. Provide the password and click on Continue.

You should now be connected to your Windows VM.
